Summer Tips to Keep Your Pets Healthy

Here are some essential summer tips to keep your pets healthy and comfortable during the warmer months:

Hydration is Key Always ensure fresh, clean water is available for your pets. Consider adding extra water bowls around your home and yard, and bring water along on walks or trips. Watch for signs of dehydration like excessive panting, lethargy, or dry gums.

Never Leave Pets in Cars Even with windows cracked, car temperatures can become deadly within minutes. On an 85°F day, the inside of a car can reach 102°F in just 10 minutes. If you can’t bring your pet inside with you, leave them at home.

Protect Those Paws Hot pavement, sand, and concrete can burn your pet’s paw pads. Test surfaces with the back of your hand – if it’s too hot for you to keep your hand there for five seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Walk during cooler parts of the day or consider protective booties.

Create Cool Spaces Provide shaded areas in your yard and ensure good ventilation indoors. Cooling mats, fans, or kiddie pools can offer relief for dogs. For indoor cats, ensure they have access to cool, tiled floors or bathroom areas.

Watch for Overheating Signs of heat exhaustion include excessive drooling, rapid breathing, weakness, vomiting, or collapse. Breeds with flat faces (like bulldogs or Persian cats) and senior pets are especially vulnerable. If you suspect overheating, move your pet to a cool area immediately and contact your veterinarian.

Adjust Exercise Routines Schedule walks and playtime during cooler morning or evening hours. Consider shorter, more frequent walks rather than long sessions during peak heat. Swimming can be great exercise for dogs who enjoy water.

Grooming Considerations Regular brushing helps remove excess fur and prevents matting, but avoid shaving your pet completely – their coat actually helps regulate body temperature. Consult a professional groomer about appropriate summer cuts.

Summer Hazards to Avoid Keep pets away from fertilizers, insecticides, and pool chemicals. Be cautious of open windows (especially for cats), and watch for stinging insects that might provoke dangerous reactions in curious pets.

Taking these precautions will help ensure your furry friends stay safe and comfortable throughout the summer season.
