What To Do If The Dog Finds your Chocolate

If your dog finds and eats chocolate, here’s what you need to do:

Immediate Actions:

  • Stay calm but act quickly
  • Remove any remaining chocolate from your dog’s reach
  • Note what type of chocolate it was, how much was consumed, and when
  • Call your veterinarian or pet poison control hotline immediately

Why It’s Urgent: Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder are the most dangerous, while milk chocolate is less toxic but still harmful in large quantities.

What NOT to Do:

  • Don’t wait to see if symptoms appear
  • Don’t try to make your dog vomit unless specifically instructed by a vet
  • Don’t give human medications

Symptoms to Watch For:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Increased urination
  • Tremors or seizures
  • Rapid heart rate

The severity depends on your dog’s size, the type and amount of chocolate consumed, and how quickly you act. Even if your dog seems fine initially, chocolate toxicity can develop over several hours, so professional guidance is essential.

Time is critical – the sooner treatment begins, the better the outcome. When in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution with chocolate ingestion.
